Only Japan has endured the devastation of atomic bombs, resulting in the loss of countless precious lives.

To ensure that no one ever again has to endure the suffering and sorrow caused by nuclear weapons, Sakura City is working to abolish nuclear weapons and achieve lasting world peace. We send junior high school students from the city as the "Sakura Peace Mission" to the bombed cities of Hiroshima and Nagasaki, with the aim of passing on the memory of this tragic war to future generations and encouraging them to think about peace. We also conduct programs such as war experience lectures at elementary schools.

We are pleased to announce that we will be publishing an English translation of "Atomic Bomb Experience Telling Together With Atchan," a book by KOTANI Takako, who has given lectures on her atomic bomb experience at elementary schools in our city.

We hope that by learning about KOTANI's experience, you will understand why Sakura City is working on peace initiatives.

 日本は世界で唯一の戦争被爆国であり、原爆によって多くの尊い命を失いました。

 佐倉市は、核兵器がもたらす苦しみと悲しみを二度と誰にも背負わせないために、核兵器廃絶と恒久の世界平和実現に向けた取り組みを進めており、悲惨な戦争の記憶を次の世代に継承し、平和について考えていただくことを目的として、市内の中学生を「佐倉平和使節団」として被爆地の広島や長崎に派遣しているほか、小学校での戦争体験講話などの事業を行っています。

 今回、市内の小学校で被爆体験講話をしてくださっている小谷孝子さんの著書「あっちゃんと語る被爆体験」の英訳版を市のホームページに掲載させていただけることになりました。

 小谷さんの体験を知っていただき、佐倉市が平和事業に取り組む理由を皆さんに知っていただけたら幸いです。

I have spoken about my atomic bomb experience in many countries, but I have realized that many people do not know the reality of the bombings. I have always been thinking about how to convey the tragic consequences of nuclear weapons to more people.

Sakura City officials suggested that my book be translated into English and published on the city's website at such a time. They said this would enable foreign residents of Sakura City to understand the city's peace efforts and help spread the reality of the effects of the atomic bombings to the world.

Mr. Nakaoka, president of Office Nakaoka, the publisher of my book, also expressed his support, saying, "I would be happy to cooperate if we could share Ms. Kotani's story with the world. Thanks to his and Sakura City's efforts, I am now able to share my experience with people in Sakura City and around the world. I'm deeply grateful to Mr. Nakaoka and Sakura City for their invaluable support.

My book chronicles my journey from the time I was bombed in Hiroshima to the time I began giving lectures in many places about my atomic bomb experience with Atchan, my ventriloquist's puppet. Atchan symbolizes my younger brother, who died in the atomic bombing. 

I'd like to take this opportunity to tell you a little more.

In Japan, atomic bomb survivors receive health checks twice a year. One of the sites is the Inba Public Health Center in Sakura City, which I visit every year as a counselor. When I talk to the survivors, many of them share their experiences at the time of the bombing. A significant number of survivors are reluctant to talk about their experiences so as not to worry their families.

I have two daughters and a son. Both of my daughters had cancer and kept their diagnoses from me.

Radiation exposure is known to significantly increase the risk of developing cancer and leukemia. It is believed that radiation from nuclear weapons damages humans on a genetic level, and these effects can be passed on to children and grandchildren.

My daughters hid their cancer diagnoses, fearing that I would blame myself for their illnesses due to my exposure to the atomic bomb. While it is uncertain whether the atomic bombing caused their cancers, the Hibakusha, or atomic bomb survivors, experience significant anxiety and suffering when they become ill and think that the exposure may be the cause. For the Hibakusha, the war and the bombing will never end, no matter how much time passes.

I hope everyone will remember this.

When I give lectures at elementary schools, I ask the children to make many friends. If everyone in the world became friends, there would be no more wars, no more nuclear weapons, and no one would be sad.

As an atomic bomb survivor, I sincerely hope that my story will help create a world where everyone can get along and live smiling.

 これまで多くの国で被爆体験についてお話ししてきましたが、被爆の実相を知らないかたが多く、核兵器が招く悲惨な事態を、より多くのかたに伝える方法をずっと考えていました。

 そんなとき、市職員のかたから、佐倉市に住む外国人のかたに市の平和事業について理解していただき、世界中に被爆の実相を伝えるために、私の著書を英訳して市のホームページで公開できないだろうかとご提案いただきました。

 出版元のオフィスなかおかの中岡社長も、「小谷さんのお話を世界中に届けられるなら喜んで協力します」と言ってくださり、こうして、佐倉市や世界中の皆さんに私の体験をお伝えすることができるようになりました。中岡社長と佐倉市に、心から感謝しています。

 著書には、私が広島で被爆してから、原爆で亡くなった弟の分身である腹話術人形の「あっちゃん」とふたりで、様々な場所で被爆体験講話を行うようになるまでのことを書いていますが、この場所をお借りして、もう少しだけ、お話しさせてください。

 日本は、被爆者に対して、年に2回の健康診断を実施しています。

 佐倉市にある印旛保健所も会場になっており、私は毎年、相談員として立ち会っています。そのとき、被爆者のかたとお話をしますが、被爆した当時の話をするかたが多くいます。家族に心配をかけないために、話せないでいるかたも多いのです。

 私には娘がふたりと息子がひとりいますが、娘たちはふたりとも癌を患い、ふたりとも、そのことを私に隠していました。

 放射線を浴びると、癌や白血病に罹るリスクが高まることが知られています。核兵器の放射線は遺伝子レベルで人間を傷つけ、その影響は、子供や孫にも及ぶと考えられています。

 娘たちは、癌に罹ったことを私に話すと、「自分が被爆したせいで娘たちが癌に罹ったのだ」と私が自分を責めてしまうと考え、秘密にしていたのです。娘たちの癌が、原爆の影響かは不明ですが、被爆者は、病気に罹れば「被爆の影響かも…」と悩み、苦しむのです。被爆者にとっては、どれだけの時間が経とうとも、戦争も、原爆も終わらないのです。

 皆さんには、そのことも忘れないでほしいと思います。

 小学校で講話を行うとき、私は、「たくさん友達を作ってください」とお願いしています。

 友達と喧嘩をしたり、友達の国を攻めたいと思うひとはいません。世界中のみんなが友達になれたら、戦争や、核兵器で悲しい思いをするひとはいなくなると思います。

 私のお話が、世界中のみんなが仲良くなり、みんなが笑顔で過ごせる世界を作るための役に立つことを、被爆者のひとりとして心から願っています。
